I just got back from a late-night showing of Lars and the Real Girl. I had read a review which wasn’t very positive, but honestly I rather enjoyed it. I came in with some misconceptions, having already seen the Real Dolls documentary, and I was glad that the movie had a very different message. While the Real Doll was a major character it was actually part of a much bigger picture. The supporting characters were all poignantly sweet, perhaps saccharine at times, and the overall message of Lars and his struggle was delicately presented in a way that let the viewer discover it along with everyone else.
I would put this movie squarely in the pile with other sticky-sweet but quirky dramadies.
