One of the channels I watch regularly always runs these ads for culinary academies. In the latest one, two high school graduates played by 20-something actors are walking down the fake halls of their fake high school. The charming guy asks the girl what’s next for her and she says “University of BORING!” And then he goes on to talk about how exciting it’ll be for him at the culinary academy.
I know that the ads cater to people who aren’t interested in a 4-year school (and that’s being polite about it), but University of Boring? Fuck you, too.

“I know that the ads cater…” Pun intended?
I recently read an article talking about how culinary schools charge astronomical tuition rates while failing to mention that the average cook only makes about $10.50 an hour. They play to the idea that if you become a chef, you’ll automatically become the next Emeril. (A lot of MFA programs run the same racket.)
(Except with writers. Not with cooks.)
I read that article too. At least the term “starving artist” is parlance in our culture. Starving chef, not so much.
Every cook ive ever known looked broke. Long hrs, come home smelling like fried everything and diet rockstar. salary positions where you work 14hr days at $5.00/hr.
meatloaf is no way to make a living.
Dammit. I watched a lot of “Cooking with the Academy” (California Culinary Academy, that is) as a child, and you just TOTALLY killed my dream. Why would they teach me to make elaborate latticework out of melted sugar if I weren’t going to make bank upon graduation??
