Thursday: Jonathan arrives, but I’m at work. He has been given detailed instructions, with map, which direct him via BART to a nearby coffee shop where we’ll meet up once I’m free. The cafe, unfortunately, is closed that day (unbeknown to be). I show up to find a jetlagged Jonathan sitting outdoors. We head home.
Friday: Again, I have work. But luckily only a half day. Jonathan is again given directions to the school via BART so we can meet up for lunch around 1pm. We go to Boudin on Market, which is delicious. Back at home we bum around, have dinner, watch Arrested Development, and are both too lazy to do anything constructive with our time.
Saturday: While I’m at the dentist, Jonathan explores the Lake Merrit Farmer’s Market and comes back with lots of goodies. We go to back to the city via BART to meet with some students of mine for a drink, as they have finished their course and exams. We meet at the top of the Bank of America building (still kicking myself for not thinking to bring a camera) and are treated to drinks. Plans to meet Pancha, Andrea, and other friends for dinner are reworked as the restaurant we had planned to go to is all booked; we eat at A La Turca in the “Tendernob” district. We go back to Leia’s place for more booze and are graciously given a lift home back to Oakland by Thompson.
Sunday: We go to the Thai Temple in Berkeley for brunch, and spend WAY too much on yummy food. We explore Telegraph Ave a little bit, and then head to Solano so Jonathan can see the Bone Room. Heading home I introduce Jonathan to Ikea and Cold Stone Creamery.
Monday: We go to the Oakland Zoo! Then we drive down to Fremont and take the 84 bridge over to Redwood City. I introduce Jonathan to Savers. We head towards Windy Hill, stopping in Woodside to pick up sandwiches. We then drive to Windy Hill for lunch, and hike to the top for pictures. I give Jonathan a drive-though tour of Portola Valley and we stop at Stanford Campus to take a few photos. We meet Geoff and Andrea for dinner at the Peninsula Creamery in Palo Alto, and then spend a good 4 or 5 hours chatting in a nearby bar.
Tuesday: We go back to San Francisco to see the California Academy of Sciences Aquarium. We walk through China Town and have dim sum for lunch. We then drive over the Golden Gate Bridge and stop at various vistas for pictures. Then we drive over to Muir Beach to check out the ocean. Exhausted, we head home and order pizza, and watch more Arested Development. Julie arrives in town and crashes at my place!
Wednesday: We take a rest day and do very little. In the evening we go to the Alley with Julie and Devin, get good cheap Mexican food, and watch Crank.
Thursday: We drive to Yosemite and spend the day hiking and taking lots of pictures. We have a tasty dinner and relax in the evening watching a special on how the Golden Gate Bridge was made.
Friday: We drive south through Yosemite and meet up with Brooke and Heather in Fresno. We help set up for the Fresno City College Renaissance Faire, have dinner at a local brewpub, and crash in the hotel room.
Saturday: Faire! Jonathan has a lot of fun with the Irish guild, I help out with St. Henry’s as a servant of the house, and in the evening we get food at Chevy’s with people. Jonathan comments that Chevy’s was the least enjoyable meal he’s had so far.
Sunday: We drive back to San Francisco and meet up with Tom, Devin, and Julie for dinner at a Thai place on Grand.
Monday: I have to work again, but Jonathan carpools in with me and leaves his luggage under my desk while he spends a little more time in the city. He explores the Ferry Building and relaxes in the cool cafe (now open!) near my school. He joins me for lunch before heading off to the airport via BART.
